Cheap Tip of the Day: What I will not skimp on...

Wednesday, January 31, 2007

Or" What I won't skimp on" for the country folk...

Detergent- Most of my clothes are not designer pieces and most of them don't cost over $20 a piece of clothing. So you gots to take care of cheap clothes. I learned this from my Soror Kindra who was size -0 in college and had tons of clothes but most of them were from juniors department and what I called "hoochie mama" stores. But you would never know. She was meticulous in washing, hanging, and pressing her clothes. She said to me,"You can't wash cheap clothes in cheap detergent, you want to at least get the $10 out of it that you put in it!". That simple.

Eye Makeup Remover- I have literally tried all of the drugstore/mass market crap that burns my eyes. Lancome Deficils remover works like a dream.

Tweezers- Because I do my own brows, I rather have the good tools that cheap ones that don't grab the hair like you want it to. I probably got7 or 8 Tweezermans lying around

Pantyhose - I'm a big booty/big legs girl who needs big protection. And there are never any big sizes on sale.

Shavers- Cheap shaving cream but no cheap razors. I have no time for nicks and dry skin.
What won't you skimp on ??

Product Rave and Review: Skin MD Natural Sheilding Lotion

Skin MD Natural is a great lightweight moisturizer that I even use on my kids. At first I thought it was too light for since I love to be slathered in lotion. But over a couple of days, it started to work it magic, keep me ash free and itch free. I use it on the boys too, at night right after they get out of the tub. They seem to like it, even want to eat it!!( chil'ren...when you get some...you'll understand the "mikey complex"). Right now I keep in samples in my bag for touch ups. I suggest that they make a purse sized one. Love it!!

Buying and Getting Beauty alternatively...

I did realize the beauty market on Ebay until a couple of years ago when I was hanging out at my girlfriend Gabrielle's house and she was bidding on like 5 different MAC lipglasses. She had just paid for one via PayPal for 5.50 with shipping. I asked her,"you buy makeup on Ebay?!" she answered,"Hell yeah! You just got to find reputable sellers and buy BRAND NEW, no used once or twice". Since, I've gotten tons of beauty off Ebay especially LE or discontinued favorites liek the Sephora White and Sephora Brown bath collections that got discontinued, Philosophy stuff, popular and new perfume decants, MAC piggie samples and the infamous Chanel Noir polish. There are couple favorites that buy from. One always waives my shipping when I buy over $15 from her and get sit shipped super fast. Trust your gut and research the prices and sellers well before purchasing beauty on Ebay.

I also hunt like a wolf for products at TJ Maxx and Marshalls-They are the best down here because there distribution centers in the Carolinas. There is a TJMaxx in Pineville NC( outside Charlotte) that's hotter than July with the swag. Reason: a TJMaxx distribution center is five miles away in Fort Mill and sends that TJMaxx the hotness. But that store is always hella busy!!! Recently I've been lucking up on Kiehls Musk,Korres products,Stacked Style fragrances,Aquolina Pink Sugar( I got the fragrance @ on TJ Maxx and the bath sugar cubes and body powder @ a Marshalls) and Perlier.

All because it drugstore don't mean I'm still not sale shopping- I clip coupons out of Sunday's paper and scan and compare drugstore sales papers. The PJ Brand Saver is a life saver!!

I'm a sample pimp- I can get sample of fragrances and cosmetics at counters like nobody I know. I learned in retail that being nice goes a long away and buying one thing does too. Last Saturday I went by the Origins counter and asked to see the shaving cream that they have. I commented to the SA that lurv the Ginger line and once had the souffle and scraped the bottom the jar of it. I got her laughing and having fun and she made me deluxe sample of the shaving cream, threw in some samples of skincare and other body souffles, and a bag of those peppermint gum balls they have( since lurv those too). I bought nothing but have enough to have fun with with no obligation to use it because I bought it.When I lived in Rock Hill and worked at Dillard's Carolina Place I made friends with a girl at the Lancome counter who left to go work at Sephora. Once I bought her a Chick Fil-A kids meal because she had no lunch money. She remembered that. So before she left she asked me to come out to her car one day. She had packed me a bag of serious gratis that included Deficil eye makeup remover, several GWP bags filled with mini sizes, lipstick, Juicy Tubes, perfume testers and 4.75 that she was giving me back for buying her a kids meal @ Chick Fil-A. When I go in Sephora now, she is the main hook up, packing me up with goodies.

Point: Think outside the box when buying!!

Review:Nature Girl and Rich Hippie Products

Nature Girl Organic Rose Botanical Body Lotion- An awesome, nurturing moisturizer that took little too much time to soak in. But once it's in, it has staying power.I love the packaging with graffiti on a simple bottle. It boasts rose and other floral extracts but the smell was slightly dull. I think it will work good for this summer when its hot and I don't want to smell perfumey.

Nature Girl Nature Groupie Rosemary and Mint Hydrating Body Wash- The body wash is 100% better than the lotion! The scent was true to the description, minty and oh so refreshing. Because it doesn't boasts a lot of the chemical solvents that other body washes do, it makes very little suds. To me that's okay, I always think, more suds, more dryness.

Nature Girl Love Organic Sugar Scrub in Lemon Peel- Loves it!!! The Scrub has these lumpy sugar pieces( Brazilian brown sugar) mixed with organic sunflower, jojoba, and calendula oils. And I'm not a big scrub fan but this one is now my go to scrub for summer skin preparation.

Rich Hippie Organic Perfume in Bliss- I love the name "Rich Hippie"!!Sniffing it out of the bottle does it no justice!I applied it and it totally developed on my skin into this fresh green scent. Bliss is also a great smell when mixed with Nature Girl Rose Botanical Lotion.

Rural Glamour's SAG Awards Fashion Recap!!

Soror Jada...simply beautiful!!
Pink looks good on YOU!!!

Very good,Vanessa. I don't know if I'm crazy about the hair though.
I love this. See you can wear beading and sequins and not look like the statue you are nominated for!!
Somebody finally stepped in and helped Chandra out. I think she could've done without the wrap.

Great silhouette but the color is a little off. Maybe more of an emerald would have worked!!

Cheap Tip of the Day

Learn how to do your own beauty(hair, skin, nails, eyebrows, etc.)

I had to learn and learn early. My mother, who is a successful buyer and makes more money than most in our small town is cheap as hell. It comes from growing up poor in rural South Carolina. So she won't spend money on splurges on unless it was necessary. That meant trips to the salon, waxing, makeup. So as a teenager, I learned how to do my own hair. My cousin DeeDee moved down here from Knoxville when we were 14 and had taken cosmetology at her high school so she could braid, weave, anything you wanted. I would sit and watch her do hair in her grandma's kitchen. She showed me how to do relaxers, bond in weaves, wraps, twists, and how to keep healthy hair. I still use alot of what I learned today. I wore a weave for over two years that everyone thought I was running to Charlotte to get professionally done. Hell,I was gluing those tracks in, taking in out every three weeks, washing the weave and putting it right back in!

I learned to pluck my eyebrows from my mom and I read beauty book after book on how to give yourself home manis and pedis. I don't think there's nothing I go get professionally done only a edge up around the back of neck and that's free( my cousin Kwame, a barber/hustler). I save serious paper because I know how to do beauty stuff for myself.

RURAL GLAMOUR'S REAL CHEAP BEAUTY WEEK 2007!!

One night while watching TV, I stopped at Oxygen to watch the Tyra Banks Show. The show was about her trying to prove her cheapness even more, the beauty edition of it. She drives me crazy with that I'm cheap spill even though she is worth MILLIONS and MILLIONS. Well, Miss Tyra, I got cheap for you and it's not beacause I don't want to spend money but beacause I GOT to be. so by the powers of drugstore/mass market makeup/beauty products, I crown this RURAL GLAMOUR's REAL CHEAP BEAUTY WEEK 2007! This week I'll give my personal tips and tricks I've learned over the years and posts to help anyone who wants the wear cheap stuff and look, smell, and feel like a million bucks well, maybe a $1000. I don't claim to know everything and some stuff you will probably already know or heard about. Hell,I splurge for time to time but saving on other things allows the splurging. Let's go!!

Jamie

also, I crown this week PRODUCT RAVE WEEK!!! I got so many things to review, good and bad:( so watch out for that!!!

Diary of a Nouveau Nappyhead Part IX

Friday, January 26, 2007

Today, I went tryin' on wigs @ one of the local asian beauty supply store.I did it because I want to give the fro' a rest while growing and I wanted a quick new look. I get bored with my hair pretty fast. That explains all the weave I've worn in the past. So while trying on wig after wig I finally this cute curly natural straw set one. It looks like what I want the fro' to look like. But course,it 29.95. So,I'm not surprised,I've have wigs before, worth more than that, but that was pre-chil'ren Jamie. I just couldn't bring myself to by the wig. $30.00! So,I left the store and now I can't stop thinking about the wig. I can see wearing different headbands and scarves with it ala "Effie from Dreamgirls-I'm Changing-Dreamgirls finale-Effie". What's a girl to do?

A Piece of Me...

Thursday, January 25, 2007

This is the "almighty"( as my momma would call it) lookbook/style diary/idea book. I have other journals for different things but this is the Rural Glamour think tank. I have cut outs out from online, old magazines, new magazines, beauty coupons, blog ideas, shopping lists etc. I feel quite lost without this book. Miss Kim and I are always talking about our books. So I thought I might share this little piece of me with ya'll!

Sniffed...

Tuesday, January 23, 2007

I was just telling Avin that I finally made it to a Ulta. I wasn't impressed. I just reminded me of my sorely missed Cosmetics Store in Pineville that's now a Jason's Deli. But I did get to sniff Britney Spears new fragrance Midnight Fantasy. I love it and must have it. Even though the notes are supposed to be floral and amber,I smelled blueberries!! And bottle is very pretty. If anything, that hoochie's got a nose on her.

My MAC Haul!!

Saturday, January 20, 2007

Yes...I,Jamie, went to the MAC counter. I met my LS Shannan in Greenville today. I just didn't feel spending another Saturday alone( another story):( Any way, I had a ball!!! Now back to my MAC haulage. From the left:

MAC Chromeglass in Metalberry- The SA actually made me try this one. She said my coloring was great for it. And it is!!I love it and I've been reapplying it all day.

MAC eyeshadow in Jete'- I got the LAST one. It was actually on hold for someone who never came and got it.

MAC Amazon Eyes quad from the Icon 4 collection- Grismil, my SA, convinced me to get this. When first same the collection,I wasn't that impressed but I had to have something from it. Grismil sat me down and layered the colors on my eye and it looked fabulous. This is a fantastic buy.

MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Glissade- After reading Toya's review/advise(thanks) on it, I decided to check it out. Also sent a prayer up to the good Lawd above that if I like it that there would be some in stock.Yes, Jesus love me!! I can't wait to really put it on. They also had Lightscapade. I might go back and get that one.

5 things you don't know about me...

My sweet Avin over @99 products tagged my ass for this. Thanks ma...

Let's see...
I'm tagging Samida @ Stained Couture, Sylvia @ I Like Her Style,Erica"E-Dub" and Jenn Wes.

I wore braces for 4 1/2 years.

I didn't get them til I was 15 and the orthodonist put the bottom rack on first then six months later the top rack. Then I had my roof of my mouth cracked and realigned and had to wear this little device where you have a key to turn it. I also wore those horrible rubber bands and colored caps in different colors. After I pledged in 1996 I had my whole mouth done up in pink and green!! Then my orthodonist took them off and didnt give me any retainers and my teeth immediately started to shift. So he gave me a brand new set of braces on him. This time I had ceramic braces that stained like crazy. I wore those like for a year. Then he bonded retainers on the back of my teeth. Thank God for bonded reatiners because I got grown friends that wear retainers at night.

I've never had a new car.

Never, but since was 13, I've had a five cars, none I've purchased on my own. I've had a 1978 Plymouth Champ,1985 Ford Escort( my sweet 16 car), 1987 Dodge Lancer("Blue"L" Dog" RIP!) 1990 Buick Regal, and 1994 Toyota Corolla. To be honest, I don't want a car payment.

I played the flute for 11 years

I started in the 6th grade, was on my Jr High and HS marching and concert bands. I marched for all four years on my HS band(core style, for the band geeks). Then I played on different ensembles in college. I can pick it up now and play my HS fight song off the top of my head.

At one point, I wanted to be an attorney but Constitutional Law I in Fall 1998 changed that.

That was one the worst classes I ever took. I was hella hard and the work load was ridiculous. I did however like my professor and all of classmates. Everyone helpe me through the class but when I was through, I quickly looked into another career option. But I can tell you about all kinds Supreme Court cases. My favorite was Miranda vs. Arizona.

I never had a Jheri Curl AKA in Union as a "Curly Kit"

My mom had one that was like something off Coming To America. It was curly, loopy, springy and perfectly wet at all times. Then she wore a face full of Fashion Fair and smelled of Emeraude. She so fabulously 80s when I was young!! But she told me that "Two people in the house could not have "curls", it was too expensive( this coming from a woman who had 20 Aigner purses)". I think she didn't want to damage my hair. But I begged and begged and never got one. My Cousin Tiffany had one and I was so jealous and she knew it! We talk about that all the time:)

Who rocked that hair?

Thursday, January 18, 2007

Here's Sienna's hyped-up GG hair do that everyone's raging about...
Mary...she rocked this MONTHS ago... as part of her 2006 album release.
Which one do you prefer?

You're Fired Valentino!!!

Wednesday, January 17, 2007

Another fashion faux pas is tarnishing the awards season's haute couture reputation.
Jessica Biel's slim-fitting metallic gown from Monday's Golden Globes gala is the same one Hilary Swank wore to a Vanity Fair Oscar party in 2004. Last year, it was Reese Witherspoon who was burned after being caught in a "vintage" Chanel number that had been worn by Kirsten Dunst in 2003.

"I loved this dress and felt great in it," Biel said in a statement Tuesday. "It is unfortunate that I was told by Valentino no one had ever worn the gown before, but I think Hilary has amazing style, and I'm flattered we share the same taste."

Valentino issued a statement, too, but would not specifically address the Biel mix-up: "Valentino dresses are timeless, and each woman brings to them her own interpretation. Two beautiful actresses can be different and great even in the same dress."

What happened? Ultimately, it's the responsibility of Biel's stylist and Valentino's public-relations mavens to research gowns to be sure they haven't been worn to high-profile events before, says Treena Lombardo, fashion market director at W. "But in the harriedness of the season, people are just doing their best with a lot of gowns flying in and out of hotel rooms."

And perhaps a pink slip or two floating around as well.

Beauty Find of the Day!!!

I know ya'll won't believe this, but "la broka chica" Jamie is wearing Chanel Allure lipstick in Boudoir. I received this in the mail a couple of weeks before Christmas and was scared to wear it. Maybe because it retailed at like $29! Okay,I've had expensive makeup in the past but that was the "my living my la vida loca debt-ridden" past. But in true $29 lipstick style, the color goes on even in one swipe and looks fantastic on me. Folks, I think I'm slowly falling back into the buy-it-so-what-its-$29 trap. Ah...I'm in love with Chanel lipstick! Also planning on trip in G-ville to see the MAC Raquel Wlch Icon collection. Gotta get my money and mind right!!

Rural Glamour's Golden Globe Recap!

I watched the Golden Globes last night including the pre show on E! and the TV Guide Channel. Well,I missed the last 15 minutes of the Globes...I went the sleep on the couch! But here's my...you know...ADHD beauty/fashion synopsis of what went down:

* Lots of Black, jewel tones, and white dresses. I thought perhaps NBC was planning a mass wedding we didn't know about.

*Chandra Wilson of Grey's Anatomy cleaned up well. She usually looks busted blaming it on motherhood. Note to Chandra... Being raggedy ain't always the kids fault.

*Puffy...excuse me,Sean Combs, looks like he had lost some weight in that blue brocade tuxedo jacket.

*Salma Hayek had her chi-chis out as usual!!! Go Ugly Betty!!

*Jada Pinkett Smith was wearing her Founder's Day Salmon Pink looking fabulous.

*Why did that Eddie Murphy/Tracey Edmonds duo catch me by surprise? I so knew they were together.

*Where was the neckwear? I mean who wore necklaces? I saw very very few.

*Vanessa Williams hair. I could have done that. I hope she didn't pay over $25 for that. But her dress was fire.

*I'm sorry...Cameron Diaz's Chanel number was totally ruined by her fire-ass red lips. I more subtle face would have did the trick for such a wonderful dress.

* Okay Miss Reece Witherspoon, you are single and fab in yellow. Didn't like the hair though.

*Makeup- was pretty typical to me, smokey eyes, nude lips, red lips, shimmery skin. JHud did a plum lip that out of ordinary.

*Speaking of my beautiful, first award of the night, Jennifer Hudson...I loved the dress, Vera Wang satin, umpire, navy, very flattering. Needed something though. Maybe she saving it for the Oscars:) I more in love with her each day!

*You knew it was coming...Beyonce. I sort of felt sorry that she didn't win her singular awards. Even though I know she wasn't going to win Best Actress over no Meryl Streep. Of course she had on her best gold lame, beaded, sequined, with a keyhole at the navel(?) drag and her longest Yaky hair. Her jewelry was great though. Even though she didn't win , you know her parents are going ride the hell out the "Golden Globe Nominee/Winner" title.

Favorite looks and Fashion No's are coming up...

Be sure to watch Fashion Police at 8pm on E! tonight!

Happy 99th Birthday Alpha Kappa Alpha!!!!

Founded on the campus of Howard University in Washington, DC in 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is the oldest Greek-letter organization established by and for African American college-trained women. To trace its history is to tell a story of changing patterns of human relations in America in the 20th century.

The small group of women who organized the Sorority was conscious of a privileged position as college-trained women of color, just one generation removed from slavery. They were resolute that their college experiences should be as meaningful and productive as possible. Alpha Kappa Alpha was founded to apply that determination. As the Sorority grew, it kept in balance two important themes: the importance of the individual and the strength of an organization of women of ability and courage. As the world became more complex, there was a need for associations which cut across racial, geographical, political, physical and social barriers.Alpha Kappa Alpha’s influence extends beyond campus quads and student interest. It has a legacy of service that deepens, rather than ends, with college graduation. The goals of its program activities center on significant issues in families, communities, government halls and world assembly chambers. Its efforts constitute a priceless part of the global experience in the 21st century.

FOUNDERS:
The Original Group: Anna Easter Brown, Beulah Burke, Lillie Burke, Marjorie Hill, Margaret Flagg Holmes, Ethel Hedgeman Lyle, Lavinia Norman, Lucy Slowe and Marie Woolfolk Taylor

Led by Ethel Hedgeman Lyle, the nine Howard University students who came together to form Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority were the scholastic leaders of their classes. Each also had a special talent or gift that further enhanced the potential of this dynamic group.

The Sophomores: Norma Boyd, Ethel Jones Mowbray, Alice Murray, Sarah Meriweather Nutter, Joanna Berry Shields, Carrie Snowden and Harriett Terry

With the exception of Ethel, the original group of women was comprised of college seniors. To ensure the continuity of the organization, seven Class of 1910 honor students who had expressed interest were invited to join without initiation.

The Incorporators: Norma Boyd, Julia Brooks, Ethel Jones Mowbray, Nellie Quander, Nellie Pratt Russell and Minnie Smith

Nellie Quander was elected president in 1911. Under her visionary leadership, Alpha Kappa Alpha initiated a dynamic plan of expansion. The first step of establishing a national body in perpetuity was taken in 1913 when Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was legally incorporated.

I purchased mark. Face Expert Flawless Touch Makeup in Deep a couple months ago. I guess took a wild guess on my shade since I had no real samples to go by. Face Expert goes on pretty sheer and is supposedly applied with it's own sponge tipped applicator. This how I used it: I shook it really good so that will coat the sponge when I take it out, spot sponged the parts of my face that I needed coverage and then took my foundation brush and evened everything out. the formula itself is fabulous, unscented, sheer but gives just the right amount of coverage, color match perfection. It's the packaging that is trash. I guess it would be good for travel if you didn't want to bring all of your brushed with you. But I bring all of my brushes(ha!).

Word on the Street....

Word on the Street...well in this week's US Weekly,

"Hot Stuff has learned that on January 5,Golden Globe nominee Jennifer Hudson,25, posed for photogragher Annie Leibovitz at the Apollo Theater in Harlem for Vogue photo shoot. One insider says, "She may even end up on the cover."(A rep for Vogue confirms the shoot took place for March issue, but says the cover hasn't been decided)It's yet another accolade for Hudson- and is unlikely to please her Dreamgirls costar(and rumored rival) Beyonce' Knowles,25, who a source says, has long coveted the cover of Vogue(though she appeared in a four-page feature in 2003). A rep for the magazine says, "We don't favor one actress over the other."

Today,I'm wearing L'Oreal Star Secrets Penelope's Red. I never thought I would find a red lipstick I liked. All of the red tinted lip glosses and lipsticks always look too much on me, so I had given up of red lip shades period. But I picked this up a couple weeks ago and love it. It gives alot more color than the other Star Secret shades like Eva's Caramel which is too orange on me or Noemie's Plum which is too sheer for my liking. Who knew I had something in common with Penelope Cruz?
